2024 GX 550 hood ripple at highway speed.

Just purchased my 2024 GX550 last week. Love it. But noticed that the center section of the hood ripples like waves on water at highway speeds. I saw some reports about it online and took it to my dealership today.
Although it does distract me a bit, it makes no discernible noise. I’m not certain if the sheet metal is steel or aluminum. So my biggest concern is that if not corrected, will the constant flexing just above the twin turbochargers and their heat cause issues with the paint?
My GX has the black metal flake paint and I do not want it damaged due to movement inherent from the factory.
What I was told at the service department is that this is a known issue and that a fix is in progress. They said most parts are in, but they are awaiting some special clips. The mods will be installed on the underside of the hood between the existing sheet metal and the insulation layer.
I don’t know any more about this. I have no idea if they will notify only the folks who complain about it, or if a recall is imminent.
I’m new to this forum and this is my first Lexus (after driving Toyotas for 29 years). As such, I don’t know if any other model years or other models have this fault. But it is a fault. It’s been my experience over the years that this company is reliable, both in its designs and its service.
So this is just an FYI to anyone who was wondering about whether their hood was about to fly over the windshield.
And if they fix this, maybe they’ll give us control of our map orientation on the navigation screen (because in eastern Tennessee the roads have lots of curves and the map constantly spinning is another distraction…)

There is much discussion about this topic on here. Mine does it, but it doesn't bother me. Some folks have done a DIY fix and some have made Lexus solve the issue.

Thanks for the info. I probably shouldn’t have started a random new thread. But I am old and can declare ignorance (and don’t do FB, Insta, or any other social media).
Is there a way to attach my post to an existing thread? As an FYI post, maybe some of those folks would like to know that Lexus is at least working on the issue.

I had this issue when I first picked up mine, I just adjusted the front rubber stops to the highest point where the hood could barely close and it went away.

Hmmmm
If I understood what you meant, I made an adjustment. I located two ribbed cylinder-shaped plastic or hard rubber (not sure which) at the front corners inside the hood compartment (over the headlamps). I rotated each counterclockwise about four half-turns. I made sure the number of rings I could count was equal for each. And it did take a very firm push to latch the hood.
I will try it out and let you know if you’re my hero or not…
Thanks

it bothers me too! please post if you learn more!

User @Oakleyguy on the IH8MUD forum posted the lexus bulletin over there. I've confiremed with my dealer and am on the list (few weeks out) for getting mine addressed. I'm attaching the bulletin here as well.

Looks like the kind of thing I'd try myself for the cost of some NVH, urethane foam, and a pack of clips from the parts department in order to get it done sooner ... right up to the hood removal of the final steps. If anyone has the repair manual available, which outlines how to do this, can you direct me to it

This is SO awesome! So we schedule an appt at dealer and they fix it?

Apparently, but won't be able to confirm until mine's done in a few weeks (hopefully). You can see what the solve is by reading the bulletin, and I'm hopeful. The top of the hood is just incredibly flimsy. Go press down on yours with your fingertip, and see if it flexes like a taught balloon. Maybe it’s just mine, but it’s just super flimsy. The fix is to squeeze in 20+ beads of caulk (effectively) across the span of the hood, and another 15 chunks of foam interspersed. All these appear to be supports between the flimsy top and the rigid bottom layer. 35 new bracing points seem like it ought to make a significant difference; hopefully, the dealerships are patient and follow the directions closely, as a big red notice in the instructions warns that an excess of the caulk-like dampening goo "could negatively affect the appearance of the outer hood".

Thanks for the update. I asked my Lexus service people about this when I took it in for the 5000 mile check. They were unaware of anything fixes coming to address the issue. It's concerning to me when driving at high speeds into the wind.

@RickBullotta - the service bulletin indicates a Production Change Effective VIN of JTJTBCDX#R5020717. So theoretically, yeah it was addressed starting with that VIN, and anything later doesn't qualify for this fix. However, whatever they did obviously didn't eliminate the issue entirely according to @wlfkfgkwlak. Unless some 2025s are in that VIN range, i'm not sure.

If your service manager doesn't know about the flutter fix, ask them to lookup bulletin L-SB-0013-25 by number, or show them the PDF I posted above. They may not have got the memo, but it is out there.

Will do. Thank you so much. I just called him and left a message. This is excellent info

Just picked up my 2025 and have been on the look out for this issue and can report I have ZERO hood shake. I had it in a BAD way on my Hyundai and know this issue well. For me... none. My rig was manufactured in 2/2025.

Sounds like the fix is working. I spoke with my service writer this morning and he confirmed they have the fix. You have to take your vehicle to the dealer, they confirm the problem by driving it and then will fix it if they can replicate the flutter. He said the problem is confirmed 99 percent of the time.

Hi everyone,

I have some feedback on this issue. Dealer approved the repair and ordered the parts mentioned in the service bulletin. However, because my build date was 11/24, they said those parts come installed by the factory and did nothing to fix the flutter. I was disappointed, especially since the company’s motto is the relentless pursuit of perfection. Even the Lexus ES loaner car does not have this issue. My wife’s 2013 VW Touareg does not either. Hope the paint does not crack over the long term.
