There is a new scam going around on forums. A scammer tries to sell a product for a really good price and asks you to pay up front via Zelle, or some other method where you have no recourse. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it is! Please exercise caution when doing deals like these. They are legitimate humans and are hard to detect... if you see something suspicious please report it!

Thank you in advance

Caveat Emptor!

Bump!

We've had to ban a few scammers recently and I know of a couple members that paid in advance and got ripped off. Please guys, be careful.... these guys are hard to spot. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.... they want money sent first, usually via Cash App or Zelle. Stay vigilant.

Do you have any examples of what they were trying sell? I know I was getting scammed by someone selling cheap rim/tire package.

I've seen those, roof racks, step rails, any relatively common accessory that won't arouse too much suspension. We ban the account and delete the posts so no one else gets caught up in it.

Maybe minimum age & minimum posts? That way it's not as easy to make a new account right after getting banned.

My mistake for being greedy and ignoring the warning signs

Suggested to admins, making it mandatory that ALL fs posts must have pics of the items fs, with a paper that has their username and date ON the item.

I almost fell for the same..

Cruisebeast01 had this (but no date). Was trying to get at least three forum members to pay for the same probably non-existent wheels.

Hopefully I was the only one who got got

There needs to be a way to verify the account. Of course with a way to protect the personal information.
Plus these scammers need to be reported to law enforcement.

No thanks. I'm not giving a copy of my government ID or personally identifying information to a small niche forum, no matter how secure it seems today.

Fully in support of other methods for validating users and deterring scammers though.

i know a lot of posters don't post a lot at all, but can there be a minimum post count or membership length before someone can post an item for sale?

I find your post funny as this type of seller verification could have prevented you from being scammed.

I don't agree with giving my ID either, but with regard to protecting the users of this site...something has to give. At least you have some real information about them before you send $1000 to a complete stranger.

I am not implying on this sort of proof. But there should be something like confirming a phone number is still better than nothing... And advise ppl to only use Paypal - Goods and Services for payment...

If shipping this stuff wasn't so expensive, using a middle man as an escrow agent would be ideal. I've done that before. But on a set of wheels and tires, that's just too damn expensive.

Totally agree and understand your perspective. I got greedy and made a dumb, preventable mistake.

I'd understand if this forum implemented the policy - I just wouldn't be willing to send my info.
