Hello GX people,

New member here, and new to this whole GX world (not a previous owner or fanboy). I experienced this same madness when the Corvette C8 was announced, many wanted one, dealer lists were hundreds or thousands long, 2-3 year wait times in Canada. Took me 2 years to get my '23. So here we go again with this new GX550.

Last 2 weeks was the big car show here in Montreal, Lexus had their big booth showing off the NX, RX, GX, LX and TX plus a gorgeous LC convertible. The Lexus reps were talking up a storm, if you liked what Lexus had to offer, skip on over to your local dealer, and buy the vehicle you saw at the show. I already knew there was some hype around the GX550, so assumed there would be some wait time on it.

After calling 2 dealers, this is where the shock set in (contradicting the fun spirited car show talk with the reps)

  • Most dealers in my province of Quebec will NOT sell you the truck, they will only lease it to you. Reason is because of fear of exporting it to the Middle East where it is highly sought after. Was told I can buy it back after the lease term, because nobody in the Middle East wants a used truck, only a new one. Same goes for the LX.
  • One dealer told me that I MIGHT be able to buy the truck, but I would have to sit down with a sales guy, show them my family worth, have them do a full background check on me, drop a $5k non-refundable deposit to show I mean business, and then the dealer boss will decide IF he will sell me the truck (which they normally do not do). Same for the LX.
  • I am told that most dealers here are telling people NOT to park the truck at a shopping mall, as it will likely get stolen minutes later, and shoved into a metal container, it is a hot ticket item. Same for the LX.
  • I am told that a tracking system is a must for this highly stolen truck (I already have some on my other cars so that I was going to do anyways). Same point as above, the truck WILL get stolen, not MAY get stolen. Same for the LX.
  • I am told the wait time on a GX550 (as well as an LX) is between 1 to 2 years.
  • I am told that this madness is normal for Canada (and specifically Quebec) simply because of our Canadian dollar, where this truck is the cheapest, hence the dealer concerns for it being exported to other countries. There are no markups either, leases at MSRP (or sells for the few people who are hand picked for a purchase option).
  • Feels like I am trying to buy an exclusive Ferarri, where they choose you (for multiple reasons) instead of you choosing them.

From what I have read on other forums, I do not think it is the same mafia madness in the US as it is here, even though you might have dealers marking up the trucks over MSRP. Remember, I have lived thru much of the same with the C8, and was lucky to be sold one and at MSRP, but had to wait 2 years to get it.

I have an appointment with a sales guy this Sat, best case I convince him that his lease-only option will not work for me, and that another dealer might sell me the truck if my background check passes (sounds so silly). And worst case, I leave a deposit, go on their long wait list, and agree to a lease, and live with the fact that if I want to buy back the truck after the lease, it will cost more than simply buying it outright. Although if financing the purchase, the interest paid might add up to the extra paid on the buy-back, so who knows.

The hype on this new GX550 is beyond madness, I thought I was past it having gone thru it with the C8 (market has calmed down a lot now that the Z06 and ZR1 are out), and the worst part is that I like the truck, but am not googoo over it either, it's a nice looking mid-size truck, period.

And one final note, I also like the family oriented TX, was an option as well (to replace our VW Atlas, similar space). The sales guy told me that I can have a TX in hand within 2 weeks, no wait list, tons of inventory. WTF Lexus ???

That is a shame!
Can you purchase a GX in the US, either from a dealer or a private owner, and drive it across the border?
Will registration be a problem in Canada?

I have a feeling that a couple of years down the road, you will be able to buy one in Canada when the demand elsewhere has been mostly met.

I had a very different experience in the GTA, ordered my GX550 in Sept 2024 - delivered Jan 2025. The dealers that I talked to were clear that it could be a year or more wait depending on the config but were pretty confident that it'd be a 6-8 month wait as long as I was flexible on color and specs with a small refundable deposit.

They didn't care if I paid cash/leased/financed. When I paid cash my sales person said just don't sell it right away or Lexus will withhold future allocation from the dealership.

Montreal dealers sound sketchy, I'd try reaching out to Toyota/Lexus Canada corporate, find someone on Linkedin who's responsible for dealership training/dealership operations and let them know what the dealers are telling you. Toyota Canada seems to keep Lexus dealers on a tighter leash than Toyota dealers and may tell the dealers to keep it a bit more consumer friendly.

Probably easier and cheaper to just order it from Houston and have it shipped to you. Canada sounds like a broken place.

I'm happy you did that post and shared. It is exactly my experience and I'm in Montreal living 5 min from Port...

The only lexus gx I've seen were in the shop with broken glasses (theft attempt), even a truck driven by a Lexus exec.

The sheer difficulty to obtain it, the scammy busibess, my insurance premium and the fact that IT WILL get stolen.

I've cancelled all my deposits.

A dealer (won't say which one) told me they could get me one in months if I put a 35k deposit that would be refunded after ONE YEAR of ownership.

I mean come on.

I contacted Lexus Canada to inform them aboutmy experience. I'm an Audi BMW customers since 20 years. Lexus GX550 would have been our first Lexus. They just don't care.

Lexus corporation is not bringing enough supply to Canada because of FX rate. They prefer even to have over supply in USA and do discounts there.

It's called a paper launch. GX and LX are not really real products.

Forget this, cancel your sub to this forum and move on haha.

Joke aside, reach out to Lexus Canada and let them know the damage they are doing to their image with this situation and the shady dealership moves.

They will tell you supply is still an issue after covid which is wrong. Demand is higher than supply yes but disparity between US and Canada is just ridiculous.

Canada has free trade agreement as well with Japan. Not sure US Japan.

So I'll probably change my X5 for another X5 which is in fact a superior product to the GX. But those are two different products and can't be really compared.

Wife looked at the blue LC Premium at the auto show (didn't like the 2st edition dust trail on display) but it felt like a compromise to her. She loves the X5. Not a good sturdy truck but the best all rounder.

Enough with my rant...sorry and thanks for the opportunity to get it out.

When I was shopping for mine in November some dealers out West were adding as much as $5K blue-sky to the msrp and others would not sell to out of state buyers. The dealer website listings of GXs for sale are unreliable. Ultimately it's best to call dealers directly. I was lucky and found one 1500 miles away with my first call. Took delivery in December and sold it in January. These trucks are unicorns and when I put it up for sale on Autotrader it sold in 10 minutes for my asking price. We sold it because it was just not the right vehicle for us and overall I was disappointed with the Lexus.

So update, I was so frustrated with the whole situation yesterday that I got up from my work desk, went into a conference room and called Lexus Canada. I knew my corruption mafia dealer feedback may not make it to the top, simply because the lady who answered the phone at Lexus Canada sounded like the fall center was contracted out, and they were there just to collect the info, feedback, complaints and then forward it along.

I told her that Lexus Canada has some serious problems with many of their dealers in Quebec, perhaps across Canada too.

I get the fact that there is a wait list, like I said I waited 2 years for my Corvette C8 during the hype years of 2020/2021 where the wait lists were hundreds long per dealer. However my deposit was made in Ontario because all the top dealers with the most allocations were there. Ontario got 10-15 allocations per month, Quebec only 1-2. In the US, the biggest dealer got between 100-200 per month. Wow !!

So will see where my conversation goes this weekend but if they rub me the wrong way, I may just repeat my C8 journey and find the biggest Lexus dealer in Ontario with the most allocations.

If the guy from the GTA (Toronto) area can let me know what big dealers are down there, would appreciate it.

The only pain point is chasing the gov’t afterwards to get a lot of tax money back, because we Quebec people have to pay the Ontario HST and then register the vehicle here and pay another provincial tax. For my C8 it took a few months to get about $15k back.

All the best in your hunt for the GX! Thankfully I don’t think we have the same auto theft problem here being landlocked. I’ve heard it’s beyond terrible there for car theft because you have an easy port east.

I haven’t also heard about the lease only thing here, but I have been told wait lists of 2 years. I certainly don’t need to be in a rush to buy a car, & assume once the hype dies down supply will come about closer to demand.

No dice w/ the 'biggest dealership' in Ontario. Don Valley Lexus gets (probably) the most inventory in the GTA, and it was more than a 2-3 year wait when I tried to order (in August 2023). I ended up calling Lexus of Barrie (who only get 6 allocations a year), and was able to secure one (still took a year and a half). You're better off calling smaller dealerships than you are the big ones.

Pretty crazy that Lexus has a HUGE hit on their hands with the GX redesign, and unlike GM who had a very detailed and strict process in place for each dealer to manage their huge wait lists for the new C8 corvette and how allocations are assigned, here it sounds like Lexus does not have such a mature allocation process and each dealer allocation. And now we have dealers making their own rules for making the most out of their very little allocation numbers

My dealer in TX only works on MSRP, she said she has a black OT+ first come first serve, do you want it? Pretty easy to get shipped.
After shipping, import duties, and sales taxes it would be cheaper to pay the ADM. Let alone warranty implications etc.

Dang its that bad? What's the benefit of being on the north american continent if you don't get any of the benefits of being in USA? I'd probably campaign for joining USA just so you can have seamless warranty with Lexus

we aren't a state...

its difficult to blame them for not giving a shit when they sell every car they make

If its any consolation I ordered on launch day, and got my GX OT+ about a year an a half later with no ADM, just had to wait until my place in line with my local dealer came up. Didnt hurt I am a long time customer and this is my third car from my salesman.

Wasn't a perfect experience but I am happy to have my car now.

That said, patience is a virtue. They are going to churn tens of thousands of these a year out of factories and soon they will be common as mud.

As I mentioned above, the situation is similar to purchasing my Corvette C8, when it was announced in 2019 as a new 2020 model with rear engine, everyone flocked to the dealers and their lists instantly became hundreds long in Canada and at the biggest dealers in the US it was thousands long.

GM had told dealers not to mark up the cars else they would be penalized and some dealers still marked up the cars.

Dealers made buyers sign paperwork that they were not allowed to sell the car for 1 year else they would go on a GM ban list and not allowed to purchase any GM vehicle for life. I know one guy in Ontario who wound up on the ban list.

The hype was thru the roof, wait times were painfully long, supply was limited (at least here in Canada), and demand was the highest ever.

Fast forward to today, years later, and with a ton of supply and people dumping their base model Stingray for a Z06 or ZR1, and now you have find the car for sale used or new with little wait time.

So been there done that and just hate the idea of having to do it all over again. Patience will be a virtue here and the hype will die down once more vehicles are on the road and come up for sale used.

In the meantime, Just bums me out that I need to find a new downtown underground parking that will fit the truck, my current building won’t fit it.
