Impact of proposed new tariffs on foreign built cars?

My GX is expected to arrive at the dealer sometime between now and April 12, and the new tariffs (announced yesterday) are scheduled to take effect on April 2nd. I guess my question is whether my GX has already made it through customs, in which case it's a non issue. I just don't understand the typical timing sequence.

Thanks!

I have one on order. No Date yet. With Tariffs I will no longer be purchasing it. Will not be able to afford it, Or will it be worth it to Bad too Sad.

I would talk to dealer about honoring price, otherwise you’re likely to pay a hefty import tax

Perfect timing. I have been waitlisted with Longo since last July because on principal I would not pay over MSRP for the vehicle. Just got off the phone with them on Monday and it looks like my allocation is only 1-2 months away. Guess I will be driving my Taco a little longer.

Its impossible for anyone to predict what will happen, but I would assume Toyota/Lexus will absorb the cost for a short time before passing the price on to the consumer. Big organizations like Toyota have a lot of bureaucracy and are generally slow to react to stuff like this. One thing is certain: if Agent Orange actually decides to go through with the tariffs, vehicle prices across the board will go up, up, up.

I put my deposit down just under a year ago. My OT+ was recently manufactured and is in transit. I was expecting to pick it up in April (at MSRP). If the price increases anything close to 25%, I'm out. I'm not paying $100k for a GX.

I haven't heard anything from the dealer yet, so we'll see.

1. Tariffs are collected as the product clears U.S. customs.

2. Even if your GX doesn't process through customs until after April 1st, it does not necessarily mean YOU will be paying more. For example, BMW already made a $1B provision to earnings for tariffs, as it is not passing tariff costs along to buyers (at least for now). Will Toyota Motor Corporation eat tariffs for a while and not immediately pass on to buyers? I don't know.

3. The cynical side of me says some less than ethical dealers might try to add some made up "tariff transaction fee" even if the manufacturer is eating the tax.

If anyone has better info please correct me.

I have had a $1,000 deposit on a 2025 Overtrail + since September. If I'm hit with a 25% Tariff then I'm out.
I will buy a used Yugo, Lada or Trabant before buying a US made Ford Chevy or Chrysler.
Prices on Ford, Chevy, and Chrysler will go up too for the following reasons:
1. They manufacture a lot of cars in Mexico and Canada.
2. Demand for domestically produced vehicles will increase drastically while supply remains the same.
3. Materials such as steel and aluminum are now more expensive

The only manufacturer that is going to benefit in the short term from this is Tesla. Until other countries retaliate.

Mines at port now and shipping via train very soon! Hoping the tariffs don’t come into play! That’s a MASSIVE cost increase if so!

Now seems like a good time to find one on the dealer lot. I would be surprised if Lexus has enough markup to eat the entire cost of the tariff. It will be really interesting to see what happens with the MSRP though.

Despite taking a risk on the first year build with quality and markups etc , it may prove a smart investment....go figure. Agree you can't make this stuff up. The tariffs "if" passed on to MSRP will keep the used GX's that much more valuable. Definitely feel for those in line and on a wait list and understand the frustration.

We're taking a wait and see approach. We have a deposit on a Lux+ for my wife, but the dealer said we can back out of the deal if it ends up with a stupid increase due to the tariff. It should be here late April to mid May.

You just replace "Dealer Adjustment Fee" with "Government Adjustment Fee" and you're still going to have people buy these.

If my memory serves me right, some dealers were charging $10K+ over asking on these and people were still paying the money.

Demand will decrease. The question is by how much.
