Just had a discussion with my Lexus dealer about an update on my Lexus GX OverTrail+ which I've had a deposit on since August 2023 and now I am being told end of August 2025 at the earliest. Currently they have had no GX allocation for over 2 months. They are not sure what the problem is but apparently there are no engines for the Canadian Market. We have booked reservations for our Alaska trip starting late may and that Ford Ranger 2.7L V6 Lariat may be coming.

Unless availability and waiting is an issue, why not the Ranger Raptor?

I have a 22 Tacoma TRD Pro...if I were in the market today for a mid sized pick-up, it would likely be the RR.

I thought about the Raptor and it certainly is a beauty but towing and payload are a priority and so is city driving. Prior to the 2.7L yes but practically - no.

Well your second choice sounds nice. But check out the Armada also. Unfortunately the 3.5 TT engine they put into the GX is the very same engine Toyota puts into the Tundra so I believe they are using all or at least most of the new engines to replace those 100,000 plus that are blowing up in the Tundra under warranty. I to was in line for a new GX but ended up with an Armada, which I’m very happy it went this way. O From the first year issues with the GX I’ve seen on some forums I wouldn’t be very encouraged to wonder off into the wilderness of Alaska with an unproven first year model. I’m sure you won’t find a Lexus dealer behind any bush in Alaska, I mean the Toyota company is having troubles getting parts for people in the populated areas like Canada and the U.S. as an example I’ve read people are waiting months for GX windshield replacements, the hood wobbles at highway speeds, a few transmission issues etc. etc. most is small stuff that wouldn’t leave you stranded but those engine problems are major even though it’s mostly in Tundra’s an d LX’s it’s the same engine in the GX and with the GX being new maybe all it needs is some time for the issues to come up. Lexus as made a superior vehicle in the past and I believe they will get it straightened out but I wouldn’t think you would want to be a test subject in the backwoods of any place.. your trip sounds like fun so have a great time. Also if not to much trouble please post what you end up doing. Oh, had my Armada now for a few months and just loving it.

Glad you are happy with your Armada. Did you end up with the new designed '25 or the '24 with the V8?

Also, correction on the GX engine. It has only (not mostly) happened in Tundra's and LX's built in the US. Toyota has publicly stated it was a manufacturing issue that all evidence points to being resolved before the GX550 engines were built. There is no public information anywhere to say the GX has had any engine issues.

Agreed. The Tundra recall is (obiously) for Tundras, which are made in the US, not Japan. I'm not aware of any engine failure issues connected to vehicles made in Japan, including the GX.

It was the 2024 which was the last year before major changes. The Armada 2025 is also all new from frame up is which is why I quickly purchased a 2024, tried and true for a decade now. Plus I got a great deal on the Platium model, over 10K below MSRP.
No GX issues yet, let’s hope that’s the case and it stays that way. I’m 71 and just don’t want any issues if you know what I mean.

Have you had a chance yet to sample the Ranger? How does it compare to the GX? Not quite the same vehicle & obviously not in the same price class I know. Yet both are on my radar for perhaps different reasons. Oddly though my Ford dealer it seems gets hardly any Rangers in compared to F150s. Sales dude is supposed to give me a call once they get one in that isn’t pre sold. Forget getting near a GX here any time in the near future either, but I don’t need to be in a rush.

2025 GX550 now on "Build your Lexus" dealership page. Wasn't there 2 days ago, was still 2024 model. Know there's no such thing as building your own but at least some movement.

After much deliberation, it only makes sense to wait for my white OT+ GX. The Ranger is probably the best mid-sized truck made right now with a proven Twin Turbo V6 and great tech especially for towing. Unfortunately, it's a truck and adding a truck bed topper won't make it an SUV and that brings me back to why I need to wait the Lexus GX. My dealer did offer a March delivery of an Earth coloured OT+ that came up but with sales tax the OT+ is $130,000.00 CDN and for that I am definitely getting what I want and not what I can get.

Good choices all around. Regardless of the hand wringing on this forum, the Lexus is head and shoulders ahead of the big 3 now, day by day during ownership, and in the future with holding its value and being a stress free quality beast for years to come.

You're spending lots of $$. Hold out for what you want. Not what they want to give to you!
