This is driving me crazy. The non lock button on the left always works. The lock button on the right 90% of the time makes a long beep sound, followed by two short beeps, which I think means fuck off because it then does nothing. 10% of the time it closes and locks. Have I not figured out the secret, or is it possessed?

My experience has been the same. However, before I posted this I went out and tested it. I tested it twice and it worked both times, immediately. I watched a video of this and I'm going to try it next time it happens. The video made it seem like that's a delay built in to allow you to grab whatever you have in the back and after the delay it beeps again, closes, and locks.

Same here, the lock button never worked for us, it beeps, we walk away and stare at the open trunk. The close button on the left works 100% of the time.. What’s the secret to getting the lock button to work? Worse is the kick sensor, it’s snow season and there is always slush, mud and dirt on the car, but the sensor is also covered in dirt and the kick sensor wont activate until I clean it and run a car wash. I don’t know what goes through the Toyota engineer’s mind when they design certain features ..

Check out this video. It explains the tailgate operation and how to use the buttons and make adjustments. Skip to 4min 45sec: GX550 Tutorial
Thanks, I think mine is at defaul setting. I haven’t changed anything since we got the car.. press and it should lower trunk and lock right away.. but the trunk beeps once and doesn’t come down. When I press the lock button, it doesn’t have the continuous beep on the second option with 30s delay. Maybe I ll have the dealership show me when I bring in for servicing .

30 sec delay built in to allow you time to grab your stuff and get clear.
This is so when your hands are full of stuff, you don't have to worry about locking the car.
30 seconds later, the entire vehicle is locked.

So I learned a little bit. I'm in default setting. Problem is, it wont close when I stand where I need to stand to close it.

If I stand around the corner by the tire and press it, it will close. If I stand leaning over inside, it will start to close and I can duck out of the way. It's only if I stand in a normal position under it, and then walk back that it won't close. Something has to be wrong with the sensor.

Sounds like when you stand in normal position and hit the "Close and Lock" button your key fob isn't being detected. Maybe you have a low battery in the fob. Easy test to change the battery and see if your GX will close and lock with you in the normal position.

Nope, fresh. I'll post back up after I bring it in.
