Hood Flutter Investigated and Corrected

Hey everyone, I have a non permanent but reasonably inexpensive and effective option to reduce hood flutter. I installed 2 pairs of these hood bump stops by screwing them into the structural support under the hood just until they touch the underside of the hood. These are just long enough to reach, and short enough to reinstall the felt back under the hood without obstruction or flexing. Good results for about $20.

This is a great idea!

The Hood flutter "thingy" has been the greatest comment/question I have seen on the '24 GX 550. I took delivery of my Overtrail on 2/10, just completed a 1000 mile trip in it. I never saw the flutter occur. The balloonish tires gave me the biggest headache - not nice and smooth like a good set of Michelin Defenders would give. :)

Took mine to Sewell Lexus in Dallas for my 5K and they said Lexus is testing a few fixes for the hood flutter and it would be covered as soon as the final procedure is confirmed. I remember reading that a few folks' dealers sent theirs off to a body shop for the fix. I'm not sure why testing various fixes isn't already completed. So I'm on a list now for that, brakes (parts on backorder), and passenger seat massage not working (parts on order).

Nice. Did you get yours from Sewell? That’s where I got mine. Luckily no flutter or brakes issues. About to reach 1K soon.

And you are not worried that this could lead to raised dimples in those areas on your hood? It seems like the hood metal is fairly thin and any fluctuation/pressure with those bumpers pushing up from below could lead to deformaties on the hood. I have the hood flutter myself and plan to bring it up on 5K service in a few weeks, but I'm going to wait on Lexus to come up with fix vs trying somethign that may cause hood damage not covered by warranty. I've just learned not to get fixated on my hood when driviing at high speeds. :D

Yep they are great. They sent me a video from the mechanic who inspected my brakes, rotated/balanced tires and all the other 5K stuff. Nice touch.

Sewell told me they are testing various spray in foam type fixes.

Why would they do this when there's a formal Lexus Tech Bulletin (see post #104 above)
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough-- Sewell claimed Lexus was still testing various fixes. Not Sewell themselves. I didn't notice the tech bulletin posted above when I last posted, so thanks for pointing that out. Looks like it was published about the same time I was in for service so I'm assuming the service guy didn't have the latest info on this yet.

I had my friend at Toyota check the TSB. He said the parts show a 6-8 week back order for the wedges and materials per the TSB. Since Tom Wood Lexus would not perform the work I said I would pay Toyota to do it; however, the parts are $675 alone (plus labor) and have that 2 month back order

I absolutely considered this, and I purchased the bumpers i did because they have a very flat leading side that provides the widest possible surface to contact the hood. Some bumpers have a rounded end or little nub and I definitely didn't want that because I think it would lead to exactly what you are concerned about. I had considered installing 18 of these but determined that 4 seemed sufficient. I only screw them in so they just barely contact the underside of the hood so they don't push up on the hood at rest. I have gone through carwashes with high down pressure fans at the end and the flex on the hood is reduced, but i have watched for any effects from the bumpers and have seen none. When Lexus has an official fix, I'll take these out and let them correct it with whatever they come up with.

Hi I went to my Lexus dealer today and they showed me the TSB. It was dated 2/7/25 and they acknowledged the hood flutter and approved fixing it. The problem like others have posted, is that the parts are not available. They will let me know when they have the parts so I can schedule another visit to get the issue fixed.

I had mine in to review the brake squeak in reverse and hood flutter on Feb 21. They inspected and followed up with noting the parts for both fixes are on order. I did note on my prior 5k check up the hood issue but no TSB was available at that time. Paper work if it helps others. They did not seem to think it would be a long wait for parts but we'll see. I let them know the brakes were more of an issue when cold, but not so much after truck was warmed up. They may not have heard them during evaluation.
