Impact of proposed new tariffs on foreign built cars?

I'm on a waitlist and just checked in with my dealer this week on whether there would be any impact. All they are saying right now is that its "business as usual" for now. For me it's really simple -- if there's is a Tariff that raises my price by even $1K, I'm out. I've had my 4runner for 14 years, what's a couple more?

Same for us. Only nice thing is our trade in jumped by $3g this week. Maybe there is some window where I/we get lucky.

I guess you aren’t trading in a Tesla!
I came from a Model Y to my GX a week ago and Tesla is so toxic now the dealer didn't even give me a lowball trade in offer. Just said point blank he’s not interested in the car at any price and to sell it to Carmax.

Disturbing that the same people trying to dictate that all of us need electric vehicles are now trying to destroy the leading ev manufacturer. What happened to saving the world through “green energy”?? They’ve proven their motives are strictly political.

Hopefully this plan of leveling the playing field pays off in the long run. There will definitely be short term growing pains, but we have to get this country back on the right track or we are doomed!

I'm not a moderator but can we keep political opinions out of these threads? It's been a great place to share GX related information with each other, no matter your side of the aisle.

Didn’t intend to be political, just stating some observations revolving around the terrors and the state of the economy. In fact, I was speaking against the politics.

@RickBullotta When did yours arrive at port? My vessel arrival was 3/22 (presumably New Jersey), not sure about customs clearing yet.
Interesting, mine got into the same port on 3/22 and shows a status of "Arrived" BUT still as of today 9 days later it hasn't even entered in "Processing" status. I'm SUPER nervous. I don't know if they determine if the tariffs apply or not are determined by the customs documentation being submitted OR when they are cleared. Logic would say the tariffs shouldn't apply if it arrived before April 2nd. I read reports the ports are severely backlogged due to all of the auto shipment coming in right now.

Have you gotten any clarity from your dealer on whether your pricing will be affected by tarriffs if it hasn't cleared customs processing by the time they kick in?

Spoke to my dealer on Friday and they had just finished a meeting to discuss the upcoming tariffs. He said that Lexus hasn't told them anything officially on increases other than they will be coming. He also mentioned there is talk of shifting GX production, in part to a US facility but that will take some time. The last thing he told me when I asked if he could see my allocation, was that Lexus plans to only produce 200 GX's in April to be split between 47 dealerships.

I am thinking now that we made a mistake passing on a '24 and waiting for a '25.

TOKYO, March 31 (Reuters) - Toyota will keep running its operations as it has been and focus on bringing down fixed costs, it said on Monday, not expressing any intention to raise vehicle prices in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.
Japanese domestic media reported earlier on Monday that the world's biggest automaker does not plan to raise prices for vehicles sold in the United States for the time being, even as Trump's 25% tariffs on global automotive imports take effect on April 3

I am hoping this is true, and other news platforms post this to keep dealerships from trying to capitalize on this.

I had been waiting since January for a basic plain OT (if there is such a thing). I had deposits with 3 local dealers and none of them could give me a delivery date before tariffs were supposed to kick in. A regional dealer called me this past Friday and says they have an OT on site similar to what I wanted with only a few additional options which another buyer backed out of. I'm picking it up tomorrow and I admit I got lucky.

I'll bet the unwanted add-ons will get even worse. The add-ons are a pure profit center for the dealers. They spend a few bucks and charge the consumer thousands. They'll probably ramp up the fleecing to make up for cutting due to the tariffs.

Or, even more likely, Toyota/Lexus will announce a new plant to be built in Smalltown, USA in 2026 and presto, tariffs are lifted.
