Premium Gas, 91 Octane

93. Cause out here in Cowtown, it's 87, 89, or 93.
We cant get any of that fancy gas here - it's too powerful and dangerous. We get 91 and we'll like it as Judge Smails says.

Tundra makes more power and specs 87. GX makes less power and specs 91.

We're running 93 because I haven't read anything definitive about why this is the case, although looking at older models which use the same engine across the board (looking at V8's and 3.5's) Lexus tends to call for 91 while Toyotas are ok with 87. I get it, the GX reportedly has smaller turbos which makes sense as the Tundra's peak HP and Torque numbers are 400 RPM higher in the rev range versus the GX.

I know even less about the LX other than it lists even more peak HP, but with the same peak torque at the same RPM as the GX. I'm very interested in how Toyota is getting away with more advertised numbers with less octane and larger turbos.

Once the warranty is up, I'm going to look at aftermarket tuners to increase the boost and make use of the additional octane.

O.K.. Just picked up my Overtrail+ on Tuesday. Do I actually have to run Premium 91 Octane gas in it. What you running in yours?
Have been running 87 in my 550 from day 1 without issue as I did my 2022 460 for 33k miles. My dealer filled mine with 87 per the staff. Wish is still had my 460 …

Consumer Reports just tested the GX550 Premium. My bet is you wouldn't have any trouble with 87 octane unloaded but if you are towing 91 octane might be better. These V35A-fts engines are built very strong to take boost and this setup in the GX550 is torque and boost limited to the very conservative side.

Fuel Economy 2 / 5
CR's Overall Mileage 18 mpg
CR's City Mileage 12 mpg
CR's Highway Mileage 26 mpg
ANNUAL ENERGY/COST
Based on 12,000 annual mileage and national average gas prices
$2,699 - gas
Range (Gas) 370 mi.

I’m calling BS on the 26mpg Highway figure. Not doable unless your going downhill the whole time…
