Quality of ride on the road with the 550 GX Overtrail.

Just put my deposit down for an Overtrail. Unfortunately there are none around to drive until mine gets here in 3-6 months.
I currently have a Rivian R1T which I couldn't be happier with the tech, the drivability on road as well as off road. I just hate the fact that I can't do trips across country without hassles and the lack of service centers makes the wait for service ridiculous. Then I read about the Overtrail and fell in love! (Except for the mileage) but if it drives the way I want, I will get over that. I'm confident it will shine off road, but with the bigger tires, I'm a bit concerned about the qulity of the ride on road... Can anyone give advice on that concern?

My OT+ rides fine but I'm not overly picky. I find it smoother than my RAV4 Prime. It rides fine on sandy and washboarded trails which is every weekend for me.

IMO Overtrail rides the best out of the GX's, it rides on 18 inch wheels.

The ride certainly isn't as refined as a unibody CUV but it's the most refined BoF SUV/truck that I've driven EDIT- actually I lie the smoothest BoF SUV I've driven is a Suburban (rental) and I'm sure the LX is smoother than the GX

I have both a '24 GX550 OT+ and a '23 Rivian R1S Adventure Package with A/T E-Rated Tires.....

Comparisons:
  • The GX rides overall smoother and is more solid over bumps compared to the Rivian.
  • On the smooth interstate highway at high speeds I think the Rivian is a just a little smoother, but partly because of its power and the electrical silence of it.
  • Road noise is a bit louder in the upright boxy GX, but not much more than the Rivian.
  • Considering I was an early buyer of the Rivian before they raised their prices, both cost within $1K of each other new, and if I had been forced to buy one or the other, I would have chosen the GX......more solid, no rattles (partly due to e-rated tires), no range anxiety, the interior wraps you much more than the wide open Rivian, and just feels like a more substantial vehicle even at 1300lbs less.

Thank you! That’s what I was hoping to hear, especially from a Rivian owner. My Rivian isn’t very quiet and not the smoothest ride. Switching to the GX OT, I just didn’t want it worse. The only thing I think I’ll miss is the power & torque. But my drivers license will be safer I think!

OT very smooth and drives great on 18 inch wheels. Big tires absorb shock.

My OT+ drives very smooth, like a Lexus.
Do you find that your OT+ is bumpy on semi smooth pavements? I feel as if the SUV is jerky on the road. Is this due to body on frame design? All my settings are on standard and set to ECO. Nothing custom. Brand new just delivered too. Also I have owned many SUVs including the old GX470 on 33s and didn’t experience this type of ride.

I think I'll go to non e-rated tires on the Rivian when I change them out. I don't tow, and I only use the Rivian for commuting to the office and back, so range reduction doesn't matter to me either. I just don't like the rigidity over small bumps that creates the kind of rattles and noises that you don't hear in the GX550 or my 200 Series

Just curious, is this a 2025 model or 2024?

I feel your pain with the wait times! I just picked my OT+ up two weeks ago after waiting for 4 months. The good news, the wait was worth it! Very nice ride on city streets and the highway, very smooth. You won't be disappointed.

Yes, my OT still has the well discussed vibration issue.

It comes and goes, except on very, very smooth and new road surfaces. I’ve seen it described in various ways, I say it feels like a shuddering type feeling. When it does I can lightly feel it in driver’s seat; and I can clearly see the (non-occupied) back seats vibrating.
Seems not to matter which suspension mode I’m in. Still there after 7800 odometer miles.
Also no diff after changing out the OE 18” Toyo tires to the one size up Nitto Terra Grappler G3 (275/70 R18, SL) on stock rim. (Put them on in Colorado on 3/3 and drove 1900 miles to VA.)
But I still really, really like this rig.
(I’m watching the forums as many of you are; aware of possible AVS and or sway bar dynamics).

I have a 24 OT+ and the highway/road feel is solid and smooth. My biggest complaint is I perceive a looseness in the front suspension over rough asphalt that feels a little like a worn ball joint (though I'm sure it's not). I wonder if it's just a characteristic of the truck. The dealer replaced a strut, trying to correct it, but I still hear/feel it.

I got a 24 OT a month ago. This is my 5th GX over the years. The OT does not ride as smooth as my past GX 470s and 460s.
That said they eliminated the over sway around corners and entering, exiting driveways. The OT feels more stable even though the ride is a bit rougher. So for me it is a welcome trade off.
The only problem is the flutter in the hood. Not a problem mechanically just a bit annoying. I hope this GX is as trouble free as the past ones I've owned.
