Reduced Capacity & Range?

I have a 2024 Luxury +. I was on the list in Feb 2024 and got it in December. I traded in a 2015 Nissan Armada. The Nissan had a 28 gallon take. The new 2025 Armada has a 23 gallon (I looked because I was going to sell my Lexus). Anyway, no matter what I do, when I fill up the tank? I never get a distance to empty at 300 or higher. Usually around 288. This has been the most disappointing aspect of this. I after market isn’t an option because of warranty issues. I understand the so called reasons for making is small, but I don’t care about a battery for another version, and citing the sticker shock filling it up, then folks should not have bought a SUV. But. Oh well. Other than that, and limited functional storage between the driver and passenger seat it’s a great ride

Does the addition of an auxiliary tank void a warranty? The tanks like those from LRA use the existing vapor recovery and nothing connects to the control computer - not sure why that would impact the NVW -

I was speaking about replacing the existing tank with an aftermarket larger tank. That will indeed void the warranty. I wasn’t thinking of an auxiliary tank

I'm a serious hypermiler and commute 120 miles daily on all highway, all flat and I drive the speed limit like a granny. I am looking forward to putting this to the test. I ALWAYS get 4-7 more MPG than MGF claims.... and I do overfull the tank slightly so excited to report back when I get the car.

I'm 3500 miles in - I'm driving calm since this is not a sports car - I'm averaging mid 16's in comfort mode.

Just bumping this thread to see if anyone else has experienced better range as the GX has been out for a while now.
Well, today I got some real numbers I can report. Mine is a 2024 Luxury, but I think most variants have the V-6 twin turbo power plant.
We drove 560 miles today from Knoxville Tennessee to the Gulf Coast. In the month I’ve owned the vehicle, we only drove around town with very little highway driving. My historical average was at 14.2 mpg. After today’s drive it’s now at 16.4.
I filled up after 292.3 miles and had 1/4 tank remaining. It held 14.8 gallons. That is 19.75 mpg and I had my cruise control set at 80 mph (although trucks and left lane cruisers reduced the overall speed considerably at times…)
Just remember that the range indicator is an “instant” calculation based on your most recent driving (I don’t know how many miles it covers in the calc.)
Yes, I wish they had installed a larger fuel tank. But if I can get 300+ miles per tankful on a road trip, I’m not complaining.
Around town driving for me is a mix of Normal and Sport modes. And on the hills and curves of eastern Tennessee I also go to Manual mode and use the paddle shifters occasionally. So I’m not complaining about 14+ mpg for that type of driving either.
Anyhow, those are some hard numbers against which to compare your own GX. And being a road trip, my wife had it packed to the gills. My tools added to the weight, so probably an additional 100 to 150 pounds besides our weight. Heck. If I’d drive the speed limit I might get 20 mpg in this ride.
I didn’t buy a luxury SUV for fuel mileage. I like comfort and bells and whistles. This baby has plenty of those things. Just remember: if you use Apple CarPlay all day for navigation and traffic info, put your phone on the charger from the get go. It’ll save your phone battery.
Hope this helps.

It depends upon your expectations, but a 300 mile range is disappointing for highway driving. When other “luxury SUVs” can offer double that range. I suppose it doesn’t matter if you don’t regularly drive long distances, but for people like me in the Southwest, long range is one of the bonuses that I enjoy. Toyota missed the mark with the fuel tank size. I wonder if crash testing entered into the equation.

You may be right about crash testing being a factor in their design choices. I’ve driven Toyota products since 1988. All of them were truck frame builds, be they pickup or SUV, full or midsize. And none of them were the easiest on fuel economy compared to similar models of other brands.
What they were was dependable and safe. But if you put aftermarket brakes on them they would squeal. If you put aftermarket oil filters on them, the valves would clatter at startup. And they’ve never been first to put out a vehicle with new technology. They wait. They test. And when they do add something new, it’s usually pretty reliable.
With that being said, they are not perfect. But I’d just about bet they had a good reason to not install a larger fuel tank. If it came down to range or safety, they would opt for safety.
It could also be that, like all automakers, they’re caught in the vacuum between the old combustion only era and the new hybrid/electric era. They all have to make space for batteries. One administration is preaching electric. The next administration says drill baby drill. It’s possible that our GX is a transitional phase. Waiting for word from above on which way to go.
