CarPlay does not reduce music volume when Siri active

I'm pretty sure it ducks the audio from the driver's side front speaker and sources Siri voice from there. The intention I believe is to let the driver hear the voice without the music dipping, like you mentioned.
This is not the first vehicle I have seen that does this, although perhaps others have options to customize the behavior.
This is my take as well. I think we can all agree it doesn’t work very well. But it seems intentional.

All we need is a toggle button to either do it this way or mute during Siri. EZPZ

The problem I have is that the Mark Levinson audio system sounds great at volume levels between 35-55, and Siri gets drowned out at that volume range. I do have a support request in to their engineering team. Fingers crossed. Will likely take months though.

This happens on the Land Cruiser as well as other newer Lexus/Toyota products. It is a known problem with the new infotainment system. It does not happen on our 2022 Lexus RX with the older infotainment nor does it happen with other manufacturers CarPlay implementations. This is a Toyota/lexus issue.

100% a Lexus/Toyota issue. And easily fixed.

Thanks for this string. I thought it was “me” and just hadn’t taken the time to watch 40 YouTube videos on how to fix it in CarPlay or Lexus settings. Super annoying. Similar to others, this is the first/only car I’ve used CarPlay in to not mute volume when Siri is activated.

Please open a support request with Lexus. The more people who raise the issue, the faster it will get fixed.

I was able to get in contact with the office of the head of Lexus in the USA, and a case has been created with the engineering team.
Thank you Rick. I was in for my 10,000 mile service and told them about the problem. It was somehow lost in the translation and the tech responded that the volume works fine. I did not have time to wait any longer to show them the problem. I will use the link you sent to open a case too.

Apple says this is an issue with the car head unit and not their fault. They tell it to duck (reduce volume) but it doesn't happen. Audiobooks and podcasts work fine by stopping the audio. Music doesn't as Apple doesn't tell it to stop. Some people seem to like that feature but I cannot fathom why.

The response I received this morning regarding the Siri mute audio issue:

I got a Highlander Hybrid in November and this has been driving me insane and I have been looking everywhere on where/how to fix this. I'm glad to at least finally understand the source being a Toyota/Lexus head unit. Really hoping this gets fixed soon because it is incredibly frustrating.

Whenever I yell at my slave, Siri, to do something for me, the music cuts out or lowers in the driver's side speakers (like others have noted) and I give her my demands and she obeys. Then the music goes back to normal once Siri shuts up. If I'm really cranking the song One by Metallica, then I send a signal from my brain to my left thumb to move a few inches and turn the volume down a bit before I send the signal to my voice box to command Siri to do my bidding. I never thought the whole ordeal was overly-taxing or a safety issue. I rather enjoy the way the it's set up where it doesn't cut off 100% of the music while I issue forth my commands. I always found that incredibly annoying in past vehicles.

But then if you have your music up loud and you activate Siri, the volume control then controls Siri so you either have to turn Siri up super loud to go over your music, wait, turn down music, reactivate, state command, hope Siri gets it right, then readjust audio to desired level vs what it does in every other vehicle ever where you activate Siri, the music ducks down but continues to play and Siri is always at the same higher volume relative to the music, and then when your command is done the music volume goes back to where it was an away you go.

And even at max volume, Siri is difficult to hear if the music is at 45% or higher volume.

Agree to disagree. "Hands free" should be, well, hands free. Hopefully they address it soon, ideally with an option so that folks like you can still do it in "cave man" fashion should you so choose.

Once this case is created, is there any way for me to jump on board with a case number or something to add any fuel to the fire? Driving me insane.
