Debating moving on from GX550

Hi there!

I have a GX550 Lux Plus. Car looks great of course and drives well, but just not "feeling" it at times. I have multiple complaints from the trianglur shaped top of the doors, to the no storage up front, cooler box so small and useless for me, tight seating in the second row...

Started looking at the 2025 Tahoe or Yukon...

Anyone else debating selling and moving on, and it so, to what?
 
Agree on the size issue, nothing can fix that. The reason I’m here is contemplating moving on earlier than I might’ve planned from my current car. Life is too short to put up with one that just isn’t working out for you. I just haven’t moved on yet (to a GX, LC or other) until I can be 100% certain what will work for me.
 
I get it. If you have issues that you can’t get past then maybe you should move on. If you go from a Lexus to a Chevy your not going to have the same quality vehicle and someone is going to get a great deal on yours.
 
I agree with all above. If it's not for you sell it. I suspect many GX owners number one priority is reliability. It is for me. I have owned 4Runners for the past 20 years and with the exception of preventive maintenance it is very rare to have any problems. I have had terrible experiences with GM and will never own another. The GX550 has had some issues with this first year release and hopefully Lexus is making right by those owners. There is nothing out there right now I would trade my GX550 for. I like the lack of fake wood grain, I think the interior looks great, It rides fantastic, more power than I need, I can work on it (with the exception of advanced electrical) oh, did I forget to mention how great it looks? If service is needed my dealership service hours are 5:30am - 10:00pm 365 days a year. I guess we all have different needs from our vehicles and that's what keeps multiple car companies in business.
 
I had a similar issue with my BMW X4. I only had it a year 9,000 miles on it. I liked everything about it but loved the new GX when it came out. Got rid of the X4 and bought the GX in October. They both have features I love but the GX was bigger and more room for me. But I get your dislikes especially no storage up front. Not sure how big of a hit you will take but I took a huge hit on the X4

Sounds like its a size issue for you mainly if you're looking at a Tahoe, because that's a 2 sizes up from the GX. GX is a mid size suv, I don't know why they keep pushing the 3rd seats and people just gobble it up, its not designed for a 3rd row. There is no trunk space left and you need amputees to sit back there. Subaru Ascend has more trunk space with 3 rows unfolded then the GX.

You can try LX600 its bigger, there is also BMW X7, Audi Q8, Mercedes GLS. But if you need a large suv, then just get a large suv, Tahoe/ Expedition/Jeep Grand Wagoneer ect

Agree on the cool box, its the worst feature they're pushing down people's throats.

Your dealer works on Christmas, Thanksgiving ect?
 
Love my GX but everyone’s family has different needs. I would like to forewarn you about GM products, as I have owned a Tahoe and Silverado and was a regular on their complaint forums due to the issues I had with both. If you plan on keeping it long term, I’d re-evaluate GM products. The variable cylinder shutoff wreaks havoc on the transmission, and there are lifters problems in the engines due to the AFM. Both expensive rebuilds. A quick google search will corroborate this. I paid for the transmission rebuild but stopped with the engine rebuild at a cost $16k. I have friends that drive Tahoes and they have had similar issues

Chevy and ford are notorious for denying the issues that plague their trucks and suvs and there are countless class actions that have been dragging out for years. I still haven’t been reimbursed for the AC rebuild that I paid for out of pocket and that class action has been dragging out for like 6-7 years.

I’d get an extended bumper to bumper warranty and get rid of it or trade in before the warranty runs out if you go GM route.

At least toyota/lexus acknowledges their growing pains and makes it right with their customers.

Look at a sequoia or lx 600. They’re about the size of a tahoe

I work in LE and everyone knows of the issues with GM. The transmission, brakes and lifters are killing them on the regular.
 
eBay Cool Box compatible tray, and these side storage organizers (they look almost factory) made a really big difference for me in terms of giving the GX that extra bit of daily usable storage.

And been there / done that with a Tahoe I had for work for 3 years. The space was nice, but dropped lifter due to AFM which then caused camshaft to try to eat the top half of the motor from the inside out at 40K miles. It was a brand new 2017 when I got it, and from all the reports I see, GM still has the same issue with their 5.3 / 6.2 motors. I do hear REALLY good things about their baby duramax engine tho. So if you go the Tahoe / Yukon route, I would strongly suggest giving the small diesel a look.

Why are you doing an engine rebuild on a GM? A new long block from GM (5.3L or the 6.2L) only cost $2500-2900 in parts cost.
 
Everybody is looking for something different. For me the GX is the perfect size. Not too big and not too small. If you are stuck on size 100% it is NOT a Yukon. Every time I look at drive and park my GX I tell myself I am glad this is a size smaller than a Yukon, Sequoia or Expedition. If big is what you want than move on….

I wanted to buy a crate engine, but the dealership and other notable engine mechanic shops told me they would send it off and it would be rebuilt with the guts but have the same shell. It wasn’t just the engine, it needed new mounters, new cat converter, and a plethora of other items. Didn’t want dump as much money that was needed to get it reliable. It was a 2014 year. Had i had it repaired it would have been worth around $18k, but to spend that much just to break even wasn’t worth the headache, better to just put that amount into a new car. Some of the problems i had over the life of the car included: lifter, fuel pump, randomly cracked coolant reservoir, starter, AC failure that happened to a ton of people with the faulty joint, transmission, horrible battery drain to which the source could never be located and constantly killing the battery, the cat converters, and the list goes on. Needless to say it spent a lot of time being worked on. It essentially felt like I was slowly paying for the car to be fully rebuilt. I realize every car has an expiration date, but my experience with GM was that i began to have to replace items early on. I’d replace something and something else would break in 6 months. Just a bad taste and Just called it a loss and wanted to move on from the horrible experience

It had the dreaded chevy shake when getting to speeds of 65+ mph and was really unnerving when the vibration struck. It intermittently felt like the car was going to shake apart. People complain about the ride in their GX 550. If they knew what the chevy shake felt like, that’s a ridiculous vibration where it feels like engine going to vibrate out of car. For now, my GX is smooth as butter, but time will tell

I looked at a 2024 Tahoe. Junk. Plastic. Do not do it.
