GX550 Hybrid engine

Had a deposit on a Land Cruiser…drove one and the hybrid was …meh… to me. Cargo area a concern as well as the lag with engine shutting off and restarting. No way to turn that off on the LC…gotta deal with it…then I drove the new GX OT+….decision was easy after that…completely different feel, sound, smoothness, etc…bought the Lexus two days ago…getting my refund back from Toyota ASAP…nobody drives these vehicles for economy and the real world difference is negligible…I’m getting 17.5-18 mpg…expect will improve as it breaks in…Most LC owners struggle to get 20 or more…

I waited 14 months with a deposit at my local Toyota dealership and gave up. I made the switch to the GX and bought a Premium Plus in August and could not be happier. I just took it in for my 5k service. I am avenging 19.7 MPG over the entire time. I keep it set on ECO dive mode and it has as much driving power as I could ever want. I keep reading owners are struggling to get the rated MPG on the LC. A lot of extra hassle for minimal payback. My 19.7 MPG includes towing 5500#’s 31 miles. It is highly unlikely they will put the 3.5v6 PHEV engine in the GX. The electrified version was developed to give extra power to the Sequoia and the Tundra. I would not buy the GX with the LC engine but that is my guess is their plan. Too many trade offs and not much to gain…..

For everyone wondering about the power train for the GX550 hybrid, here is a video from Hong Kong and it shows the GX550H. You can clearly see the badge on the back and the engine sounds exactly like the LC250, which they also have in this video.

I'll pay for a whole new bumper if I can get that hitch cover and it works! And god damn! Not nearly as worried about approach and departure angles after watching the GX and LC descend that hill.

It would be interesting to know if the 3.4L V6 Hybrid powertrain can physically fit in the GX550. Toyota may be waiting to see how the 2.4L hybrid Land Cruiser holds up before they put it in an exported GX550. It's a lot of weight and wind resistance for that 2.4L to push down the interstate. So what may happen first for the exports, GX550 2.4L hybrid or 3.4L V6 option available in Land Cruiser?

I’ve said it before, but they should put the TX 550h+ PHEV Powertrain in this thing. Not gonna happen but would be cool.
I was surprised to read that the 0-60 times on that TX500h is quicker than the GX, and this on a 203" long truck with batteries, but it does weight about 600 lbs lighter even with batteries so that might explain it. I agree, stick the 500h engine and battery on the GX please, and mount it in a similar fashion, BELOW the rear floor like the TX.

Mounting the battery below the floor would be exposing it to damage in an off road vehicle like the GX. Precisely why it is mounted as it is in the Landcruiser. The TX and RX are road going SUVs.

I don’t know, I agree it is bland but the more time I spent with it the more I was liking it, especially the interior, just felt more polished and semi-luxurious compared to the GX.

I say that and will most likely be leaving a deposit for a GX this week, but it seems like the TX team put more thought into performance and interior design and handling (4-steering) compared to the GX.

Even down to the damn glass moonroof, the TX opens, the GX does not, glass aquarium above. Why?? Off-road guys will say due to rollover. What about those who want a GX without off-roading it? There is a motorized screen, why smoke the glass as well ? Make it open instead.

Plastic dashboard, why not give us a nicer finish like the TX and LX.

Either way the GX is badass looking and many of us wanting more will have to live with the stuff we want that is not there

There is no doubt the TX has more creature comforts, a more user friendly interior especially for folks with children, better gas mileage and much easier ingress and egress compared to the GX.
But the two vehicles are meant for different tasks and with different owner needs in mind.

There are a few things however that make the GX stand out.

1. Made in Japan
The TX is made in Indiana, mainly from parts from outside Japan
2. Handsome looks that make it stand out in the sea of SUV's ; perhaps one of the handsomest SUV's on the planet.
3. Ability to provide unparalleled ability off road while providing exemplary comfort on the road.
4. Pride in ownership that will make you turn around and look at it as you leave it standing parked.
5. Onlookers will gaze at it admiringly. What is the price of that for the owner? That people like it without even knowing about all the goodness that makes it so desirable.
6. You will take so many pictures of it, in various lights, various locations. Almost like the way you take pictures of your beautiful children! :D

Well written and instantly made me forget about the shortcomings quickly, and making me forget about the TX 500h F-Sport 3 they have at the dealer, which I can drive home immediately (to replace my VW Atlas).

I own a customized C8, Atlas Exec R-line dropped on coilovers with 22”, wife a redesigned ‘21 IS, son a customized ‘94 Miata and an Audi S3, we are a car family that goes to car meets and shows. So I know I will have more fun with the GX than TX for sure, but only comment was simply I really wish Lexus included just a bit more on the Luxury/+, to match either what they have in the TX or LX. I read a good thread on here of the GX vs Defender 110 and many similar topics were discussed in there for fit and finish, especially for those who will never off-road their trucks. And I love the label mall crawler to identify those people :)

You are obviously a car enthusiast family. I think you will be happy with the GX because it has personality.
For me buying a car is more than a logical or brain decision, it is very much an emotional one.
Here’s one that I configured and ordered exactly as I wanted.
It’s more than a car for me, it’s a symbol of what I imagine a sports car should be.

I think the GX will go down as an iconic vehicle over time. The initial owners (Us) get to experience the beauty of snapping necks wherever you drive. It's unique and still rare enough. I have seen about 4 GXs in the past 4 months, albeit I've seen them multiple times. I have 3 TXs in my neighborhood and I don't feel anything when I look at them. The GX is purpose built and I absolutely love it for it. It makes me feel like I am driving an old-school off-road vehicle with all of the techs an amenities anyone could ever want. People ask me about it all the time.

I don't think those vehicles can be compared tbh. There is really only 1 direct competitor to the GX and it's probably just the Defender. The GX is also very much an emotional purchase for most because it's not really a great choice if you're daily driving it and it's all you use it for.

Depending on if the US does receive the GX Hybrid, I am curious what the pricing will be because the entire line up is so bunched up between the GX, 4Runner, and Landcruiser. At some point, the LC may be obsolete unless you like the looks of the LC vs a GX.
