I’m still orienting to some of the features of my 2026 OT plus and decided to play around with the “custom” drive modes in settings.

On my drive to LA this morning (stopping at Lexus SB for a coffee and chat with their staff), I went through different permutations of the custom driving mode options (steering feel, suspension, power train, and air conditioning) to come up with the optimum selection for long drives.

Now up front disclosure:

1. I’m a driver - and so on hwy I’m always interested in the firmest most responsive steering.

2. Given the poor mileage on these vehicles and the longer distances being driven, I made mileage a priority in my selections. Keeping in mind that most of us don’t drive our GX / off road vehicles the same way we drive a 911.

3. When in the drivers seat, I tend to tolerate a firmer drive for better vehicle handling, so that also jaded my selections.

These aspects being considered my personal favorite selection set for long drives was “sports” for steering and suspension and” “eco” for power train, and air conditioning.

This was followed by sports for “steering,” comfort for “suspension,” and eco for the remaining toggles. (Especially when sitting in the front passenger seat .. 😉).

Curious to know how others feel. And if there are any Lexus engineers in the group - consider creating more than one “custom” choice in the select menu. (For example “: custom1 and custom2 for more than one customization option).

hwy driving i mainly use Normal but around town I use Custom (Sport Steering, Sport Powertrain, Normal Suspension). I find ECO and Comfort unusable

I am also having this dilemma. I came from a pre-Google UI Volvo XC90 with air suspension where the changes were pretty dramatic. I could only drive that in Sport, everything else drove me nuts.

I have been playing a lot and now I find the opposite: I prefer Eco - I simply like the more chill throttle tip in and the idea that (maybe) it helps a teensy tiny bit with MPG, which has been horrible around town. And I find when I boot it I still get a good kick down and acceleration. So take it for what it is worth, but that is my $.02. And I'm still playing...

So on my way back from LA - I put the vote to all car occupants (instead of the driver alone) including the two other passengers… and together everyone agreed on the best compromise (while keeping powertrain on eco- and thus performance at its low end) was:

Steering: sport
Suspension: comfort
With powertrain and ac to “gas saving default”

TBH - I do NOT know that ECO gives ANY significant gas saving advantage compared to “Normal” .. would be interesting if anyone has actually studied this by trying each mode for the same run and comparing exact mileage.. 🤔

Eco all the way. That is haw I had my LX for 88k miles, which gave a combined 17.6 mpg.
If I’m expecting a situation where some aggressive maneuvering may be required, I briefly select sport. Then back to eco afterwards.

for my driving style & roads (mostly rural) I have not noticed a real difference in mpg from ECO to Normal. I've been through several tank fulls back and forth for each as a trial analysis. YMMV

Did a deeper dive on the drive modes and unexpectedly found that not all trims have the full adjustment of suspension. I found this breakdown of the specific adjustments that take place in an AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension) equipped vehicle: I.e. Luxury+, Overtrail, and Overtrail+ only.

  • Sport S+ — Sport throttle, Sport suspension, Sport steering, Normal a/c
  • Sport S — Sport throttle, Normal suspension, Normal steering, Normal a/c
  • Normal — Normal throttle, Normal suspension, Normal steering, Normal a/c
  • Comfort — Eco throttle, Comfort suspension, Normal steering, Normal a/c
  • Eco — Eco throttle, Comfort suspension, Normal steering, Eco a/c
  • Custom Mode – Pick your powertrain suspension, steering, and a/c settings

My current thought is Sport S/ S+ for around town driving, to minimize body roll. Eco, Normal, or Comfort off road. And Custom: Sport steering, comfort suspension, and eco power and a/c for long hauls without towing. From what other owners seem to report online “it’s all about a light foot on the gas” and Eco may help to the tune of 0.5 to 1 mpg off the top. Driving in Eco most of the time with speeds ranging from 65 - 80 - I’m seeing 16.7 - 17 consistently. Never more.. (nowhere close to the claimed 21 hwy). I’ve read that the GX gets its consistently best mileage at below 70 mph hwy for long hauls.

I have ceramin tint on the inside of the windshild (with WPF outside). This may help reduce cabin heat and allow eco AC in the Georgia.
The OT+ side walls and adaptive susp seem to absorb the road imperfections well. Almost as well as the LX. And possibly better than the Lux.

GX550 Real World MPG a little insight, however, not exact science

GeauX-500: Just in case someone doesn’t think to press the link that you attached::

“Tested full tanks on eco, comfort, normal, sport, and sport + until fuel light came on, all under roughly the same driving conditions/habits. Best was eco at ~330 miles, worst was sport + ~295. As a result I would say, "Life's too short not to drive in sport mode 😎” - GeauX-550

Very insightful message - the difference between Eco and sport mode is essentially 35 miles. Which is roughly 2 gallons of gas - which in Cali is about $12 per tank difference between Eco and Sport.

In my analysis - were I driving one of my Porsches I would not hesitate to burn that $12 in Sport mode. But on long hauls in the GX where I’m clipping along at between 65 and 75+… it just makes sense to stay in Eco mode and save $12 …

But I totally agree with the premise.. we paid a smidge under $100,000 for these vehicles.. we may as well enjoy them… for me that may not be in sport mode.. but rather it may be getting it out and getting it muddy and driving the vehicle for what it was made to do!

GeauX- thanks for the data and the wisdom!
