What I can’t stand about my GX

I'm at nearly 4,900 miles and my average driving distance between fill-ups is 246 miles. This doesn't mean I'm only getting 246 miles on a full tank - my average gallons left in the tank when I fill up is 3.32. I'm filling up because I'm past zero miles left on the dash display and the truck is constantly warning me to fill up. We all know about the incredibly-overly-conservative fuel warning light and deceiving remaining-range display.

Running out the numbers:

13.87 total average mpg is 13.87 so far

13.87 mpg * 3.32 average gallons remaining in tank = 46 miles

So my real average range if I used all my fuel each time is more like 246 + 46 = 292.

Remember that there's a bit of error in my numbers because I installed larger tires (35") back in July with about 1400 miles on the truck. I'm using an adjustment factor of 7.19% to account for the tires, which are 7.19% larger than the stock tires.

I'm obviously not trying my best for optimal fuel efficiency by installing a lift, larger tires, and a roof rack. Still, the best mileage I saw before the lift, tires, and rack was 15.21 mpg. My full-tank range at 15.21 mpg would be 15.21 mpg * 21.1 max gallons = 320.9 miles.

My best mileage overall was after I installed the lift, tires, and rack on a full-highway trip back from San Diego to Phx where I purposefully tried for optimum mileage. This was 15.92 mpg. 15.92 mpg * 21.1 max gallons = 335.9 miles.

So when I casually say that a 250-mile range is absurd or ridiculous, I am being a bit disingenuous. If I burned every drop of fuel and purposefully try to hyper-mile, I could bump that up to 336 miles. But since I'm a normal person, my real-world realized range is about 250 miles.

When you fill up your tank - what does the car tell you the range is? I filled up for the first time yesterday - the fuel gauge on the dash first gave me 275 miles of range, then after a couple mins dropped to 264.
 
Ok - my gripe on my OT+ is that spending $84K - I should have REAL leather. Understand the reasoning with synthetic and durability for overloading, but I'll deal with that via a seat cover versus sitting on naugahyde/Rich Corinthian leather....

My range after fillup is about the same….260-270 or so. I’ll be filling in an hour or two, will note it.
LOL....I just filled up and it gave me a full-tank range estimate of 220 miles. Remember that my actual is running 7% above due to my larger tires, but 7% on top of 220 only gets me to 235. Ignore the 7.3 mpg in the photo below - I reset the total average when leaving the gas station and just before snapping this picture.

My last tank stats are 19.78 gallons burned and 243 miles driven for 12.28 mpg (I went quite a bit past the empty warning and past zero miles remaining). This was nearly all city driving.

Here you can see my stats a couple days ago when I had driven 200.7 miles and the fuel light is on and the truck is telling me I have 5 miles to empty. Again, that 200.7 miles is really 214 miles with the 7% correction.

I may start carrying my jerry cans with me....LOL

To better put this into an interesting context - I drove a full size Home Depot van today with a 1000 pound cargo for 155 miles - it achieved 16.5MPG on the highway....out of a Van with the aerodynamics of a Maytag washer....

Are you hauling in the mountains 24/7, sheesh…. Your mpg is horrendous

I live in a relatively flat area - Scottsdale, Arizona. We are at about 1500 feet in elevation and we live on a massive alluvial fan. I'm only getting into the mountains if I head north at least about 15 miles or so. My driving is a lot of stop & go in my immediate hood, taking kids to school, picking up, baseball and soccer practice and games, karate, etc. Contrast that with this coming Tuesday when I'll do a good 170 or more highway miles knocking out some projects in southeast Phoenix (Mesa) on the far west side of Phoenix (Sun City and Glendale). That should give my mileage a good boost. It's also still 110 degrees out here so AC is practically on max all the time. Another mileage killer is starting your car 5 minutes early to let it cool down, and if you're parked and waiting for something like the kids to get out of school, you have to have the engine running with AC blasting or you'll roast to death.

Can’t stand those weak looking Toyota Corolla Dunlop grand trek tires that come with the lux+ ;)
 
I have one new nitpick, my wife has driven my Overtrail only twice yet she twice has popped the hood instead of the gas hatch when trying to fill the tank. Have to admit those buttons are hard to distinguish. Best solution is to relegate her to her LC First Edition and banish her from my truck.
Since that won’t fly, I had to label it!
