GX hood shakes

I've had mine for a couple weeks and plenty of highway and city driving. The only way I can see any vibrations when driving on the highway is watching closely and maybe there is some slight movement when I hit bumps in the road at highway speed, but certainly nothing that seems concerning. Today, however, I got my first carwash, all went fine, but at the end of the tunnel when the blowers were drying it off and blowing nearly straight down on the hood, the hood did have some fairly obvious bending and waving going on.

Has anyone pulled the underhood insulation down to see what it looks like under it? There may be a way you can add some sound deadening to the skin and maybe some rubber between the cross members and skin. This works wonders in doors and should also easily fix the flexing of the thin sheet metal on the hood. Be careful not to overdo the sound deadening to the point where it makes the sheet metal sag where there is no crossmembers. A good picture of what it looks like under the insulation would help, if anyone is willing to do that.

I noticed the hood insulation is missing one of the pushpins. I will try to get a replacement and see if it will make a difference.

Still interested to know what it looks like under the hood insulation if you can snap a picture.

I didn't remove the insulation cover. I couldn't get some of those pushpins out but I will sure take a pic if I can remove the cover. The pushpins are a little flimsy.

I posted a video driving well over 65mph on FB and no one could notice any hood vibration. It was much more apparent on my 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Much to do about nothing, you are talking about the slightest flutter you have to look for due to the weight of the hood as it is made out of aluminum (common occurrence on aluminum hoods) you really have to look for it and if you are bothered by it you are likely bothered by everything.

Absolutely well said

While this is concerning, I've never seen a hood shake on a vehicle. Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention or driving in cars that don't present a hood shake.

Per @CCTX comment above, has anyone successfully adjusted the hood cushions/stoppers (not insulation pins) and fixed the issue?

I’ve by reading posts from new GX 550 owners that are commenting about the noticeably shaking at highway speeds. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks in advance!
I took delivery of mine today and the hood flutter is definitely present. I wonder if they will install a rib or stiffener to remove or reduce the movement

I received my GX550 today and the hood definitely flutters when driving on the highway. If you're a front passenger you will definitely see it

Congrats on getting your GX.

I am still interested what the hood looks like under the insulation. I really think some sound deadening under there will stop the hood flutters.

If Lexus hasn't resolved the hood flutter issue by the time we get our GX, will be installing some sound deadening material on the underside of the hood sheet metal behind the factory hood insulation. It is hard for me to say what a good fix would be as I don't have our GX yet and can not study the underside of the hood.
Two questions.
1.) Do you think that the flutter is happening due to a larger than normal gap between the front of the hood and the grill?
2.) Where is the flutter? Front, center or rear of the hood near the windshield?

mine is right in front of the windshield. not major, but there if you look, don't notice it unless I lean forward and look for it

That is from air escaping the rear of the hood. There are many other car makers that this has happened to and owners usually add some tubular weather stripping to the back firewall where the hood meets it. They also add some vinyl tubing in the weather stripping to add some rigidity. The success rate is usually 90-95%.

Again, I don't have mine yet but this seems like a cheap thing to try.

Some other people have used spray foam insulation between the frame of the hood and the skin. I am a bit leary of that option.

We took delivery several days ago. While I've only driven this beauty a handful of times, I was hypersensitive about several of the issues that seem to be discussed a lot on this forum. Hood flex, wind noise from the rack and the ML sound system.

For anyone that hasn't taken delivery yet, IMO, these issues are miniscule. All the positives outweigh the negatives so significantly, they're negligible.

That being said, I did notice something about the hood vibration that did surprise me a bit.

I assumed the entire hood was vibrating as one structure... such as a diving board would do or like a stiff structure experiencing resonance. This is more similar to how my older Rubicon acted. The entire hood would pop up during a big wind gust, or sometimes passing a semi truck with a lot of vortex shedding.

The hood on the GX appears to be thinner aluminum, where there are flexes throughout the hood in different areas. So unless they added braces in multiple locations, I don't think it would solve it. But in general, I think this is simply a case of using thin aluminum. But as I said earlier, it didn't seem that bad to me.
