Mark Levinson 21-speaker audio sounds terrible on the GX 550 Luxury +

Once I have mine in the next coming weeks I will be taking it into my friends audio shop and having them do a professional synopsis of the ML system. I’ll report back in here with what I find out

so I haven’t spent a ton of time with mine but my initial take.

It isn’t a dreadful system from the drivers seat using CarPlay. Have mostly just listened to classic rock and the clarity is really quite good, definitely pickup a lot more subtle tones in the music that I can’t say I notice in My other vehicles ( BMW HK system, GMC Bose system, or my MB c class Burmester system). That’s a credit where credit is due from me.

I can’t say I have heard or felt much of anything in the way of bass however, which I think is where 90% of the complains seem to be triangulating to?

More bass would probably be nice, though I haven’t really tried any music with much kick yet.

I have also not played at all with any eq settings either on the phone or vehicle so will see if I can’t dial things in better.

Obviously we all listen to different music but I am a big treble and bass guy. I think it’s great at producing low end bass.

I listened to Into the Mystic by Van Morrison and was kinda blown away at how good it sounded. For me, the treble and bass are fantastic. My only disappointment is how the back seats stuff sounds.

Wireless vs wired CarPlay?

Im using only wired, iphone, completely turned off wireless carplay (fyi, even if you hard wire your phone, it will default to wireless unless you turn it off in the phone settings.)

I use either amazon music with hi res enabled or qobuz. The internal DAC is pretty good, but theres some ML funny business going on with converting normal spotify audio.

The ML 21 upgrade was $1140 in my OT+…considering I moved up from Toyota JBL w sub, the base is lacking some but if you dial in the controls in infotainment and adjust volume it sounds pretty darn good ….worth the $$$$ to me… depending on your musical preferences

I will be listening to Slayer Decade of Agression Live dialled up to 11 in my new black GX OT here in Australia when it arrives ,
We don’t get the upgrade sound system but I doubt it would make that much difference for this music, will wait a year for after market sound system to be coded and swap across for some big sounding system, not worth paying 2000AUD for an ML system that I see so many complaints about. My wife has a new Merc C200 and the sound system is sick and this is an entry model, wake up Lexus your supposed to be playing with the big boys!
