Squealing Brakes 550 Overtrail

I have the squeal 25% of the time. I told this to my dealer when I went in for 6 month service. They are ordering the disc/pads and such for me. They said a couple of weeks.

Taking mine in tomorrow AM for the warranty brake replacement. It actually rained here today (way out on the west side, happened to be out there on a job this morning). After the rain the brakes were screaming in reverse.

After 1,600 miles I've fallen victim to the squeaky reverse brakes. Taking it in on Friday. When I made the appointment, I asked specifically if they had the parts to repair this common problem, and the guy said they'd call if they didn't, so we'll see. Hopefully I'm not going there just for them to see for themselves then waiting weeks for the parts to come in.

I doubt that they will have the parts readily in stock. I guess if you are not far then that’s fine. But if you have to drive some distance you may want to have them confirm - otherwise it will just be a big waste of time.

I’m 6months into my ownership, 2200 miles and I think I started getting the squeak around the same time as you.

FYI their protocol is confirmation before ordering parts unless you’re able to finagle like I did. Good luck 🤞🏼

Another owner advised I call the dealer and get the parts on order. They wouldn't do it without a diagnostic visit, but said parts availability was typically 3-4 days. Fine. I scheduled an appoint for a Monday and was given an NX as a loaner.

They ordered the parts, and then there were delays, yadda yadda. Strung me along. The following Friday (10 business days later), I told them I was picking my car up and they can install the parts when they come in. They were on backorder. Were they going to tell me? What a waste of time and a loaner.

Sounds a bit like my experience. I was able to convince them to order the parts without verifying the squeal then it just went downhill from there. Called to tell me the parts were in (~week later), dropped off the truck and 7 days later they said the brakes were done but the anti-rattle spring was BO’d and I would have to bring it back. A month or so later got the call the part was in so dropped it off. 5 days later I could tell the car hadn’t been touched (Lexus app) so i called to find out the missing part was still not in even though they said it was so I pitched a fit. Miraculously the next day the car was ready (prob just said the replaced it to get rid of me). Same dealer scratched 3 of my wheels in the process. I demanded replacement but they wouldn’t play ball. They repaired them so poorly I launched a formal complaint with Lexus NA.

For those who live a fair distance from the dealer you can consider taking a video of the Squealing brakes. In my case once you have driven the car that day they will not squeal until they have sat overnight. Offer to email them the video and see if they will work with you to order the parts and save you a trip. They are all very familiar with the problem now they may be a little more flexible and not insist on witnessing the problem.

Quick f/u to my post earlier this week. I got into the dealer yesterday, the service rep initially told me they'd check it out but he hadn't heard of any issues of noisy brakes to date, which of course, is crazy as it's widespread. An hour later, he came out and showed me the bulletin that is out there from Lexus on how to repair. No kidding! Long story short, as most have experienced, the parts are not yet available, but he estimated 3 weeks, possibly sooner and I'd be notified when they were in. He told me I still would have come in for a diagnostics on the car before they ordered the parts, so I guess that's the drill for now. Hopefully as more GX's hit the road and experience the squeaky brakes, the process will be simpler (no diagnostics visit necessary). That is absent of course of the problem being corrected BEFORE new vehicles are delivered. Good luck.

This is my exact situation. 6 hrs to dealer, get a hotel room. Brakes squeak first time I’m backing out of garage with my foot very lightly on brakes. After that driving around, in town, backing, etc there’s no noise.
I just have to remember to make this video. I’ll try it with a couple windows down…

Raining here today. Squealing is the worst it has been.

Took a video and headed to the dealer. They did not look at the video, just wrote up a ticket and ordered parts.
Actually, they added me to the list.

Said they can only order 1 or so sets a month then another month for parts to arrive.

Looks like 2-4 months wait for me.

New Country Lexus, Latham (NY), was great. Just called and told them of the situation when making 5K service appointment and when I came in 3 weeks later for it they did the brakes. Zero squeals since.

I am now on a wait list until March 3 just to order brakes from a CO dealer, who said they can only order one set per week. So, a wait list to buy, and a wait list to order parts. I did have the parts coming today at a Tucson dealer, until the pads had to be ‘back-ordered’. Never a good word to hear. At least they tried.

Based on my experience, if your brakes are squealing now, and you plan to have the problem confirmed by your dealer, then DO NOT power wash them first. My dusty brakes went from very loud and obnoxious both forwards and back, to only a subtle squeal in reverse after I washed them. But the dealer rep was nice and confirmed the problem anyway. So, on to the next learning curve.

Despite the problems, I still really like my Overtrail, especially in dirt mode (aka squealing brakes mode).

My dealer replaced the front brakes yesterday and the new brakes are completely silent. They also programmed it so I could long press the unlock on the key fob to roll down all the windows. Plus, my sales rep James, chatted with me for about 20 minutes to see how it was enjoying my GX. Great visit to Lexus of Merrillville.
