2024 GX Engine Recall? (9 Viewers)

Lemon laws won’t help you here because they have a fix. It sucks but that’s how it works :/
At least in FL, after 30 days out of service you can initiate the lemon law buyback, even if they have a fix. Basically the dealer can't just keep your car for an indefinite amount of time taking their sweet time to fix it. Once you notify them of the filing they have 10 days to direct you to a shop (in theory the car is already there) and then 10 days post that to fix. If the car cannot be fixed within that timeframe they have to buy it back.

Some googling seems to indicate TX has a similar 30 days out of service clause in their lemon law, so JULESWTX, I'd check into the TX laws and see if you meet that criteria if that's the path you're thinking about.

Good to know 🤙🏼

Yes thank you this is very informative. I will definitely look into it.

If it's worth anything, my recommendation is to kindly, but firmly ask the dealer what they can do for you to make you whole first, before you even mention the words "Lemon Law".

In my experience and research, dealers are generally more willing and able to go out of their way for you if you don't involve Lemon Law regulations, even if you have to escalate to the General Manager, the Regional VP or to Lexus Corporate. Once you say the words Lemon Law, the dealer's gotta shut up and let Corporate & their lawyers handle it.

If I can't get information on when my car will be ready after them having it almost 8 weeks who do I turn to within Lexus to escalate my problem. I feel like this is a dealership issue.

I suggest you try to escalate to the dealer's General Manager and reach out to Lexus of North America's call center.

If you're an analogue kind of person, you can physically visit the dealership and politely, but firmly ask to speak with a manager about your vehicle.

I saw the engine recall on my app a month ago. I kept driving it since I commute out of town for work. A week and a half ago I was driving to work on the highway and I get a warning on my steering column screen to pull over the engine was about to turn off. Mind you I am traveling at 80+ MPH. I saw the speed slow down drastically and was able to pull over before the engine locked up. This could have been so much worse than me being stranded on the side of the road with 18 wheelers flying past me for an hour. My car has 46K miles on it now. Lexus tow truck took it to the dealer. They had it for a couple days and then let me know my car is one that the engine needs to be replaced on. I have not been given any time frame as to when I will get my car back. I do have a loaner from the dealership currently.
Sorry to hear that. May I ask if you extensively tow trailer or using turbo all the time before it fails?

Hope your car will get a brand new engine soon. I saw some Tundra owner which is not under recall are not getting a new engine replacement.
They are telling me the hold up is they are waiting on a new engine from Lexus.

Had a dream (nightmare?) last night the GX died while driving. Only a matter of time now 😵‍💫

I read something the other day related to the recalls that said Toyota/Lexus made a running change to improve the main bearings so that it can better tolerate any manufacturing debris that might be left in the engine. Is this new or did I just miss this?

No, it is not new. I remember sometime last year, CarCareNut mentioned in a video about a part number change occurred in 2024 suspecting some improvement may happen to the engine. In the most recent Tundra recall issued last week, Toyota admitted a improved main bearing was used but did not fix the issue.

Not new. Toyota said they improved #1 main bearing in their official recall doc in Nov 2025. E.g.
The same engines produced prior to this period were recalled under 24V-381. Some of the same engines produced after this period were produced with improved manufacturing processes and remain under investigation. Others were produced with an improved main bearing.

Also the new recall from May 2026 - https://pressroom.toyota.com/toyota-recalls-certain-2024-toyota-tundra-vehicles covers those vehicles that were "under investigation" - produced with improved cleaning process, but old version of the bearing. From Nov 2025 doc, and the just announced recall, it looks like those were only produced in Alabama? Either way, seems it's not possible to sufficiently clean these debris during manufacturing, and, officially, the main bearing change is what fixes this engine.

Based on the latest Toyota Tundra safety recall report, it appears that the GX 550 is unlikely to be included in any future related recalls. The report suggests that models produced after the initial GX 550 recall were already fitted with the updated #1 main bearings, which are expected to address the issue identified in earlier engines.

"This recall covers V35A engines of a particular configuration, manufactured during a certain period at certain production plants and used in the vehicles produced as listed above. The same engines produced prior to this period were recalled under 24V-381 and 25V-767. Others were produced with an improved main bearing, and Toyota continues to monitor the effectiveness of this improvement. Other Toyota and Lexus vehicles are not equipped with a V35A engine of this configuration."

2025 GX will be affected, quote from all major auto review magazines

"From the beginning, Toyota’s official stance has laid the blame on internal manufacturing contamination. The company stated that machining debris was left inside the block during production. If this debris migrates, it can damage the engine’s #1 main bearing. According to official documentation, the resulting damage causes knocking, rough running, hard starts or total engine failure, presenting a clear safety risk if a vehicle suddenly stalls at highway speeds.

What makes this latest expansion alarming for both owners and the automaker is that these specific 2024 model-year engines were built after Toyota implemented extra cleaning steps during manufacturing. The company has admitted that despite these enhanced mitigation measures, metal shavings still slipped through the cracks. "

You are 100% wrong, V35A with the updates #1 bearings are failing.
