GX550 Real World MPG

Picked it up mid morning and ran the first leg home from SoCal to St. George Utah. Started with 3 miles on the odo. 367 miles avg. 20.2 with a fair amount of climbing. Now that I’m in the winners circle I plan to wear clothing for the remainder… Too many weird looks at the pump.

After lift and bigger tires (285/75 R17) I'm averaging around 15 MPG. Still better than my Tacoma after lift wheels and tires but I hope it gets better.

5250 miles in and I'm at 13.88 mpg average. That's over 20 fill-ups but I must have missed two on my spreadsheet because my recorded odometer readings total 4698 but the truck's odometer is at 5250. Time to do my weekly 150-mile trip around greater Phoenix on the highways to get my mpg up so I can save $$$ on gas.

Wow, I can only dream of 20.2 mpg. You have an Overtrail, too. The only difference is you don't have any crossbars. My first two tanks totaled 501 miles and my average was 13.165 mpg. Same exact truck as yours but I had the crossbars mounted. Mixed highway and city driving.

Also, only 3 miles on the truck must be a record! I had 8.

Driving in Indiana and a few trips to Michigan, here's my stats for the first 6K miles. Averaging 17.61 mpg. Mixed city, highway, rural, sometimes taking it real easy and sometimes testing that 6.5 second 0-60 capability.

Those who are quoting MPG numbers can you comment on the following:

Are you running 87 or 90+ octane?

Do you run high ethanol content gas?

These two items can make a huge difference to mpg

I have only used 93 octane so far. I'm not sure if they have as much ethanol in the 93 octane, but definitely not running anything over 10%.

Edit: I was thinking ethanol had a lower octane rating, but it's between 100 and 114 from what I can find, so 93 probably does have 10% ethanol.

Don't worry about the clothing, they were not looking at you, they were looking at the GX :)

To some of the comments about the roof rack and mpg - I can’t see that costing us 3-4 mpg
I am getting 20-21 mpg on highway, with 1000+ft elevation changes 65-80mph with our Premium + with OEM platform rack.. I don't think it's that much? More of the AT tires I would think or could be the HVAC? I am using Shell V Power.

Sounds like everyone is getting better milage as the car breaks in - gets past 1000+ miles. Or maybe that's the fantasy I keep telling myself. 363 miles in = 13.7mpg
If I drive purely in the city, start stop traffic, I get to as low as 9.8 mpg.. you must be doing a lot of start stop traffic?

Stop and go is really the killer. I've been below 10 mpg over a few days in pure stop & go too. Tomorrow after my kid's soccer game I'm heading 220 miles up to Lake Havasu City to knock out 2 jobs. I call it paid camping and offroading. A buddy who works Mon-Fri tags along on these jobs and we chill in the river and camp overnight. It'll still be 110 here and there this weekend so it will be good times. The cool box will get some use. Anyway, I'm topping off the tank just before we leave and I'll drive in eco and see if I can hit 20, or reasonable close. I'll be happy if I see a 16 on that dash.
